Circa 1800 Antique Tibetan Thangka Painting on Silk of Chakrasamvara Embracing Vajravarahi

Date added: 03/05/10
Period: 1800s
Cateogry: Antique AccessoriesArt

Here is an image of Chakrasamvara embracing his consort, the red Vajravarahi.  In Tibetan these two are Korlo Demchog and Dorje Pagmo. As a united pair they are a metaphor for great bliss and complete emptiness which are thought to be the same. They stand on two figures representing desire and excess.
This early 1800’s antique Tibetan Thangka painting is on silk.
The colors are still bright colors but does has some wear. This is to be expected in a Scroll paintings since they were rolled and un-rolled over the past 100 or more years. The scroll painting Thangka has a wood dow at the top and bottom and the silk has slight wear due to it’s age. The piece is approx. 40” high x 23” wide and the painting itself is approx. 20” x 13”.
If you have any questions or need more photos, please email me.

A very nice large 17 1/2” x 18 1/2” Mourning Sampler signed and dated by the 12 years and 10 month old girl. The sampler is signed by Christianna Kurtzs and is dated 1843. As you can see from the photo, the piece is unfinished. She completed the two written areas but sadly, the mausoleum is unfinished.
The two blocked off word areas read: left side “Christianna Kurtzs work in the year 1843 Aged 12 years and 10 months was born May th 16th 1830”. The right side reads; ” Here is this place my name shall be when I am in eternity worms of the dust of my flesh shall eat here you may see my name complete”. A strange and morbid saying and I wonder where she found these words.
The estate said that the original owners of the sampler said the family was from Pennsylvania area. The spelling of the name Kurtzs sounds Germanic, which there was a large German population in Penn. at this time.
A large stain is on the right side, approx. 4” x 3” and a smaller one on the left. Some areas have fold wear which has caused a small rip, two in the center and a smaller one on the right tack side.
Please email with questions or if you need additional photos.
If you have any information on this piece I would like to hear from you.

1941 WWII Propaganda Oil Painting on Board by Fellows Gear Sharper Bonds Beat Bunds and Machinists

Date added: 02/18/10
Period: 1900-1940s
Cateogry: Military Memorabilia & Art

WWII historical items have become a growing collectible area for many reasons. One reason is for it’s defining moment in our nation’s Humanitarian responsibility. It was a time when almost everyone felt responsible to help in conquering the European threat of Nazism that was sweeping across Europe. When the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor this lead to our immediate involvement in the war and was when the United States moved into full production of war time items and materials.
Here is wonderful wartime piece produced by someone in the war time effort. The artist painted this piece for “Fellows Gear Shapers” and used it to show his support and effort for the war production. He was a Gear Shaper, which he signed his painting “George Calvin Graham 1941 OR 986”. The lower left has the war time slogan of Bonds Beat Bunds.
The man is standing near his machine that made precision parts for automobiles, planes, and other scientific parts. The top section of the painting shows the different items his parts went into. The lower section shows a mock order form that is stamped Rush.
This is a wonderful painting in a naive style that will have special place for the WW II collectors.
The painting is approx. 19 1/2” x 25 1/2” and is in what looks like it’s original frame. The painting is on a pressed wood and it does need to be cleaned. Some areas have “White Spots” which is paint loss.
If you have any questions or need additional information please contact me.

2 Pen Signed and Dedicated George Petty Esquire Prints with Documents of Recipient Circa 1930’s

Date added: 02/07/10
Period: 1900-1940s
Cateogry: ArtHistorical Memorabilia

George Petty was one of the top Pin Up illustrator of the 1930’s- 1950’s. Here are two Esquire prints, one dated July 1937 and the other with no date but I would say also around the same time. Both prints are pen signed by George Petty.
The rare aspect about these two pieces and four official United States Documents is that first they are signed by George Petty who did not sign or dedicate a lot of pieces and they are dedicated to an amateur illustrator. Richard V. Cutler, was an illustrator who did some work for Red Book Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post and also Colliers. Most of his work was from the mid to late teens and then again from 1927-1929. In one Pin Up, Petty’s dedication calls Richard Cutler, “Dick”. The fist piece reads “To Dick A great name a real person sincerely G.B. Petty. The other Pin Up reads, ” to Dick Cutler every good wish G. B Petty”. Both pieces are framed and measure approx. 14 1/2” x 10 1/2” and both have small damage to edges of the heavy stock paper. Please see the photos to get a visual description of these areas. Please note, that they do not interfere in the signatures or the images of the Pin Ups.
The other pieces with this collection are 4 documents from Richard Cutler and are his discharge papers form service. One is from the United States Department of Commerce, Seaman’s Certificate of Identification issued in the port of New York Aug. 27th 1937. This has his thumb print and also a photo. Another piece from the Department of Commerce is a Certificate of Service and gives him the rank of Cadet and this one is also issued in 1937. The last two documents are discharge papers and both are from the steamship “Santa Rosa”. One is stamped Cot. 5 1937 and the other is stamped Jul 13 1937.
This is a very impressive collection that has a famous Pin Up artist signing to a younger Up and Coming artist. This will make a great addition to any Pin Up collector.
If you have any questions or need more photos, please feel free to email me.

A Sperm Whale Tooth with Mid Century Design Scrimshawed in Modernist Style of Miro or Klee

Date added: 02/06/10
Period: Mid-century
Cateogry: Mid Century Design

The early 20th century artist drew inspiration from many areas and one was the work of primitive cultures. Picasso, Man Ray, the Dadaist all used the “primitive” works as inspirations. This can be seen in the works of Picasso and his cubist works, the Dadaist with the primitive sound poems and their masks and the list can go on.
Here a piece that is in the style of Miro and or Klee, both of who also drew inspirations from “primitive” works of African mask design and other cultures. This piece has a strong inspired aesthetics of the North West Coast Eskimo culture but still shows a talent of someone with a background in Western abstraction theory taught in higher education.
This is an authentic Sperm Whale tooth that has been scrimshawed with a modernist style of Miro, Klee and or other master of the early 20th century art.  I have to say I have never seen such a unique piece of scrimshaw.
The tooth is approx. 4 1/8” tall x 1 3/4” wide at the base. The wood stand is marked on the bottom, Alan Shapiro is approx. 2 1/2” at the widest point (the bottom) and is 2 1/8” high.
The total height of the tooth and the stand is 6 1/4”.

French Hand tinted Daguerreotype Artist Portrait w/ Faux Tortoise Shell Mat

Date added: 01/09/10
Period: 1800s
Cateogry: Photography

Daguerreotype collecting has been getting hard over the past few years. There has been less and less interesting images coming up for sale that is why I am glad someone brought this image in to the store, a hand tinted French portrait of an artist. The frame is a molded black frame with some damage to the top right corner. The mat is a wonderful faux tortoise shell over a white paper mat.
The daguerreotype does have scratches on the glass but the image is still sharp as well as the blue hand tinting on the artist smock. The back of the frame has the original paper, a french advertisement and states the photographer is Thalamas.
The image is approx. 2 3/4” x 3 1/2” and the frame is approx. 9 1/2” x 8”.
Please email me with questions or if you need more photographs.

Emil Orlik Aquatint Lithograph of Women looking Left circa 1900 Vienna Secessionist Artist

Date added: 01/08/10
Period: 1900-1940s
Cateogry: Art

Emil Orlik (1870-1932) was a major contributor to the Vienna Secessionist movement in Prague and was noted for his portraits. His style was almost a mixture of the Secessionist, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, which may be why his pieces so desired and sought after today. In the early 1900, circa 1903, Emil Orlik traveled to Japan and learned the art of Japanese woodblock. In this piece you can see the beginning of the woodblock aesthetic and technique.
This piece is approx. 15 1/4” x 11 /12” and is in the medium of Aquatint Lithograph.
The lithograph is signed in the plate on the lower right ” Orlik”.
The piece is framed but is not a period frame. If the item is to be shipped I would suggest the piece be shipped with out the glass to insure the piece will be delivered safely.
If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Full Signature Mona Morales-Schildt (1908-1999) Ventana Vase for Koasta Circa 1960

Date added: 01/04/10
Period: Mid-century
Cateogry: Mid Century Design

Mona Morales-Schildt joined Kosta in 1958 and worked until 1970, during this time she created strong and highly creative works. The Ventana series designed with multicolored glass in cased in clear glass is one of the icon pieces of this period. This piece, unlike others I have seen uses a darker color scheme which I think is bolder more striking piece that stands out better than the others in this series.
The piece is signed on the base with her full signature and Kosta, which is not the typical way these pieces were signed. Most of the vases were signed with numbers or some type of code. The condition is near perfect and the height is 6” high.

Have you Met Bill Jones? 1927 Motivational Poster Cards w/ Original Easel Stand Box Parker Holladay

Date added: 01/03/10
Period: 1900-1940s
Cateogry: ArtHistorical Memorabilia

Have you met Bill Jones?. This was a 1920’s propaganda campaign used to motivate people in the work place. Displayed in work areas to promote industrial efficiency and unify the work force, they were made to show what a model worker was. Marked in the lower left: ” USA & Canada 1927 The Parker Holladay Co. 100 E. Ohio St. Chicago Ill.”, these cards were created by a man named Charles Rosenfeld who was a sales man for The Mather Co. in Chicago.
The set comes in a easel that was designed to sit on your desk. The set is a collection of 52 cards originally but due to the age of this set, it is missing one card and the easel stand has a tear on the back flap.
Each card has a multicolored lithograph of amazing art deco/ industrial design inspired graphics with a motivational message. On the back of each card is a Result Chart to “Keep a Permanent Record of “Bill’s” Activities”.
The card is approx. 5 1/2” x 7” and the easel box is approx. 7 1/4” x 9”. The overall condition is near mint, with minimal bends to the corners. The colors and print area of each card is in remarkable condition. I have photographed the cards in a set of 6 organizing them according to the numbers on the lower right corner. As you can see the set is only missing number 4 in the set, but due to the amount of other cards it will hardly be missed.
If you have any questions or if you need additional photographs, please feel free to email me.

Sideshow Chiquita The Living Doll Cabinet Card circa 1900 Photography by Obermuller and Son

Date added: 01/02/10
Period: 1900-1940s
Cateogry: Historical MemorabiliaPhotography

A very nice signed cabinet card of Chiquita (real name Alizia Espiridona born 1869), also called The Living Doll and Little One. The back is singed Chiquita in pencil but I cannot authenticate the signature. There is some similarity to other Chiquita photos with signatures but I cannot give a 100% guarantee. The merits of this cabinet card is the photographer, Obermuller and Son and the fact that it is a photograph of one the early Famous Midget sideshow performers of her time.
Obermuller and Son was a New York Photographer noted for many portraits of sideshow performers in the late 1800 to early 1900’s. This photo was taken circa 1900 and is a great document of Chiquita at the height of her fame. Billed as The Little One or also as The Living Doll she was reported to be 28 inches tall and said to have lavish taste with the latest fashions of her time.
The Cabinet Card is in very fine shape, with slight fading and a small water spot in the center of the photograph.
The photo is approx. 4 1/2” x 6 1/2”.

ALPHONSE MUCHA COVER NOVEMBER 1900 COCORICO ORIGINAL IN ELEGANT ART NOUVEAU CONTEMPORARY FRAME

Date added: 12/29/09
Period: 1900-1940s
Cateogry: Art

Paul Émile Boutigny created the satirical magazine Cocorico in France in 1899. An artist himself, he used his magazine to promote the infant art movement of Art Nouveau and the artist involved. Alphonse Mucha, one of the most recognizable artist of the movement did this cover in December of 1900. As well as a few covers, he also added reproductions of his works to the magazine.
This woodblock cover of November 1st-15 1900 No. 42 and is an image that has not been reproduced to my knowledge. Here is a chance to have an original piece by Mucha.
The image is in archival mat and is framed with a contemporary Art Nouveau frame. The frame is approx 17” x 20” and the exposed image is approx 8” x 11”. The print is in good shape with a grade of B+. You can see some scuffs on the image but there are no major areas of loss or damage.

Mourning Jewelery was a popular way to show the love and affection of people that have passed. People would photograph the dead and many women would make Jewelery. This small but poignant piece of jewelery is made of silver. The piece is not marked but it is silver. The hair is under a small convex piece of glass and is surrounded by little pearls. One peal is not very big so it looks to be missing, but can been seen under magnification.
The pin is approx 1” long and will make a fine addition to a collector of such a by gone era of style and jewelry.

Leon Danchin was a very important French Bird Artist in the first quarter of the 1900’. His pieces show the serene side of the naturalist word that has escaped our modern word. These two duck are captured when they are taking off with the landscape far off in the distance. The impression is 154/ 500, which is a low number, giving the lithograph it strong colors and details. The top left is stated in the print copyrighted 1938 Leon Danchin 6 rue Edmond About Paris and is signed in pencil lower right Leon Danchin.
The total measurement of this piece is approx. 25 1/2” x 32 1/2”.
The piece is framed but I would suggest the removal of the glass to insure the piece will arrive same and undamaged.

St Teresa of Avila Stained Glass from Portsmouth RI Church Made by Rambusch

Date added: 11/22/09
Period: Mid-century
Cateogry: Antique AccessoriesArt

A wonderful Stained Glass piece of St. Teresa of Avila. This section is approx. 24” x 24” and is of top grade work. Upon research and talking to the estate, I believe this piece is by the famous and prestigious Stained Glass co. Rambusch. I have some documents from Rambusch giving specs and amount of work for a church in Portsmouth Rhode Island called Mother of Hope Novitiate. I believe this piece is from that church and is an original Rambusch piece.
The stained glass is still in the original aluminum frame with the clear glass incasing the stained glass.
As you can see the quality and workmanship is breath taking, with the precision lead channel work and stenciling of the hand blown glass. A true piece of art that is up to the quality of Rambusch.

For the Nautical Collector who like the Natural Science Arts. This Whale tooth, Sperm Whale mostly likely, is a very nicely scrimshawed with the tall mast ship in the distance and the whale diving down just leaving it’s tale visible. A classic drawing and depiction of the 1800’s whaling industry.
This scrimshaw is on a real tooth, but the art looks to be done in the mid 1900’s.
The tooth is approx. 5” tall.
