Joan Mitchell was "American "second generation" abstract expressionist painter and printmaker. She was a member of the American abstract expressionist movement". She is one of the few female artists of that style during the early days of the Abstract Expressionism, which was a movement dominated by men like De Kooning and Franz Kline to name a few.
