Tintype of Man with Young Woman in Knitted Head Covering, circa 1880's

A strange image, but the older man is seated next to what appears to be a young woman with a large knitted head covering. This could be an Eastern European obscure/ lesser known tradition or just a very strange and weird head covering. I have never seen anything like this before. 
No name or dates. 
Medium: Tintype 
Year: Circa 1880's

Size: approx 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches 
Condition: the image has no mat or frame. Light marks no the image but not distracting or damage to take away from the image. Small damage on the image margin on the left side.  Please see the images for more details.
