How else could you keep a baby still long enough to get their photo taken. The mother was trapped under a black cloth and had to sit and keep the baby still while she was hidden away. 

The tintypes range in size: 
Two tintypes are of the same child but different pose and they measure 2 5/8 x 4 inches 
size: 2 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches
