Algernon Charles Swinburne was an English poet, playwright, novelist and critic, 1837-1909. Part of the Decadent Movement and was close friends with Oscar Wilde, both lived life with excess of alcohol and sexual exploits. His homosexual love affairs grew and “people began to talk scathingly about his homosexuality and other sexual proclivities.” Meeting Adah Isaacs Menken, the American actress, painter and poet, introduced Swinburne to heterosexual love, but she said “I can't make him understand that biting's no use.”.
Harry Clarke was part of the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement, and worked in Stained Glass and also book decoration. His art was strongly based in the Symbolist style. His art has been very collectable as well as his book illustrations. This book, Selected Poems of Algernon Charles Swinburne was his last book illustration. He dies shorty after in 1931.
Condition: fine tight binding with no missing or damaged pages. Original deckle edges, light soil to the edge of pages. No soil or damage inside to pages or images. Front has some shelf marks and light wear. Spine edge top and bottom has light chipping at the edges, light but can be seen. Back has shelf marks and light staining on the bottom.
