Anna Kingsford (1846-1888), was an English anti-vivisectionist, vegetarianism and women's rights campaigner. Kingsford was also active in the Theosophical movement in England, becoming president of the London Lodge of the Theosophical Society in 1883. In 1884 she founded the Hermetic Society, which lasted until 1887.
A devote follower of Catholicism, Kingsford reported to have visitations by Mary Magdalene. Oddly, her work with Woman’s right was her introduction to Spiritualism through a campaigner with the Married Women’s Property Act, “The law allowed women to own, buy, and sell property, keep any income from the property or an occupation, and keep any inheritance. Additionally, the law made both parents equally responsible for their children” (Act of 1870 and 1882). It was around 1873 that she met Edward Maitland, a man who shared a lot of occult and spiritual beliefs.
Kingsford’s began around this time and “medical career, primarily to study vegetarianism and promote her beliefs in anti-vivisection; however an element of proving women capable of rational thought and complex skill was also present. Because women were not allowed to study medicine in England at the time, Anna was forced to travel back and forth between London and Paris to complete requirements, which over the years significantly threatened her already fragile health.”
Towards the end of her life, her health quickly declined with the on going animal rights and medical studies. “Anna passed away on February 22, 1888, with Maitland present. After her death Edward would commit the rest of his life to organizing and publishing her works, leading to the gargantuan biography Life of Anna Kingsford in 1896. The rest of her correspondence and notes were destroyed.”
