Austin Cox Enterprises 1962 Modernist Aluminum Chess Set In Case With Board for ALCOA
Austin Cox Enterprises 1962 Modernist Aluminum Chess Set
Austin Enterprises USA, 1962 enameled aluminum, with fitted case laminated wood, blue colored acrylic slide cover.
Stamped Signed with impressed manufacturer’s mark to underside of each piece: (1962 Austin Enterprises).
“In 1962, the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA)… 32 pieces were cut from aluminum bars; the white army appearing in a natural aluminum finish, with the black army differentiated by black anodized sides with natural aluminum faces. The pieces range in size from 4 7/8″ for the King down to 3″ for the pawns. The pieces are strikingly abstract in form. The Queen is represented by a crown, the Bishop by a simple cross, the Knight is a shield and the King is, fittingly, the symbol of ALCOA. All pieces bear a stamp on their undersides: 1962 Austin Enterprises.”
Size: 31½ w × 2½ d × 6 h inches
Condition: The Pieces are almost mint and my client said they have only used the set a few times, stored for over 40 years. Minor blemish on the wood case and a few marks on the blue acrylic. The Board is near mint, a few slight marks on the blushed aluminum side. Please see the images provided for details and feel free to email me with questions.
