Circa 1940's Japanese Pillow Book Shunga Erotica Folding Book Dark Leather Cover
The Pillow Book in is a book of observations and musings recorded by Sei Shōnagon during her time as court lady to Empress Consort Teishi during the 990s and early 1000s in Heian-period Japan.
Later the term Pillow Book took on a new meaning and became synonymous for the Shunga (Japanese erotica with literal translation: picture of spring) art, these books were "hidden" under the "pillow" and used to show or to enjoy.
This printed Japanese book is depicting acts of "Picture of Spring", earlier books in the 19th c. and before would have been woodblock printed or hand drawn.
The front and back cover is a soft leather and is earlier than the other brown leather book.
The book's images are very finely printed and mounted on thick cardboard with the back of the boards having finally printed gold.

Size: 3 3/4 x 7 3/4 covers. Total length is 32 14" long when fully open
Condition: fine with rubbed corners from storage and age. A couple very light water spots to some of the images but very minor. All the panels are intact and secure. Please see the image for more details
