The artist of the bronze: Franz Bergmann
Year: Circa 1890
This beautiful bronze inkwell has both the subjects to be found in this late 1800's art form, the late Orientalist and Art Nouveau style incorporated both the female form, often nude and with the often used Greek motif of the Owl. The owl was.."Owls were particularly used in northern Europe Art Nouveau (called National Romanticism) because of the large place of owls in northern mythologies and legends".

Franz Bergman (Gablonz, Austria 1838 -1894) Father
Franz Xaviar Bergman ( Vienna, Austria1865- 1953) Son
Richard Thuss, born in Nuremberg, studied in Vienna, Munich and Nuremberg. Late in life (after 1930) he lived in Cincinnati untill his death in 1945. From 1918 to 1930 Thuss was the chief sculptor for the Bergmann Foundry and executed many of the highly prized sculptures that are signed Nam-Greb, Thuss, or with a B within an urn design (those that were not designed by Franz the elder).
Not all sculptures are signed or marked. Animals, Erotic figures, Orientalist figures, Roman soldiers, western figures, historic personages, sports figures, lamps, desk sets, bell pushes, book-ends, mirrors, smoking related.."
Size: 11 1/4 inches long x 5 1/2 inches deep x 4 inches tall
Condition: near perfect with minimal signs of use. Missing glass insert for inkwell. Patina finish is even with no signs of bare spots. Please see images for details and a visual description.
