Grotesque Gargoyle From Gothic Church Ornament Bronze Circa 1930's
This small bronze appears to be a scaled version of a Gothic era building ornamentation, the gargoyles that graced the architecture of the Gothic European churches. The figures were added for structure, used as keystones and also rain spouts, but these nightmarish figured put fear into the hearts of the people but at the same time were seen as a protection, to scare away evil spirits.
This small but fine detailed version of the European Gothic grotesque gargoyle is done in bronze.
No maker or foundry marks on the piece
Year: Circa 1920's-1930's
Size: 7" x 2 3/4 inches
Condition: Near fine with minimal signs of use. The patina is in VG condition. Please see images for details of the condition.
