Halley's Comet Presentation Display of Images from 1664 Presented in Leather Case 1910
Halley's Comet presentation display from 1910
Front is gold gilt with "Zur Erinnerung an das Kometenjahr" (In memory of the Comet Year), 1910
This leather two panel display with three circa 1664 prints, all three dealing with the siting of Haleys Comet.
The bottom right image is from a popular broadside from 1664 by Martin Zimmermann for "Great Comet of 1664" not Haley's Comet.
"Broadside giving an account of a comet seen in Augsburg, December 18, 1664 with a drawing of its path through the sky. This comet was seen every night across Europe between 14th and 24th December 1664, reaching its perigree on December 18th (December 28th by the Gregorian calendar). The comet was one of the brightest of the time and reported by many including Samuel Pepys, Samuel Danforth, Giovanni Borelli, Robert Hooke, and John Dryden. It was seen again in January 1665, and was last seen in March 1665. The bird represents the constellation of Corvus (the raven). Modern astronomers have designated the 1664-5 comet as C/1664 W1." The top image translate to
"Year 1664, 3 August
At Night at 2 o'clock about 3 miles from Vienna, a wonderful circle and a half moon with its flesh and worldly portions were seen which were grasped together for a whole time until finally the cross remained on the moonlight and touched the ground and apparently held a good sign."
There is no record or indication of what this natural phenomena may have been other than a comet but the dates does not correspond with the Halley's Comet.
The first images, the large image on the left side is
"As it was seen in the interior of Austria/and in neighboring Croatian places/especially over Rackelspurg and Czacken on the morning of January 12th of this year, 1664, between 2 and 3 o'clock, with terrifying horror on the part of those who saw it.
"This supernatural torch of Divine Wrath, which has never been seen before in the sky in such a terrible form and burning fire, is to be highly feared as having a much greater effect in war and other misfortunes than those which spread over the whole of Europe for 30 days in Anrio 1618, and which was followed by the bloody Thirty Years' War, as well as the same year 1652, in which the Polish, Swedish and Danish wars took place. Therefore, because the shape of this miraculous star is so extremely astonishing, especially the half moons appearing in it, because in this state the overwhelming revelations from the hereditary enemy, the devil, resounded throughout Europe, certainly did not preach anything good, and therefore to fall into the rod of the angry God through repentance and fervent prayer too quickly is all evil at the end of the month. And because in particular in the Calendario compiled by Neubarthi for the past year 1663 under the litulum the great conjunction of the upper planets Saturn and Jupiter in the fiery sign of the heavenly shield from such a comet or miraculous star is assumed, it is to be agreed that it arose from the same conjunction. Thus, some astronomical reports could be brought to light regarding the effect of this miraculous message and then communicated in print to a great extent. So much for the news in a nutshell.
