Kuba Tribe Helmet Mask African circa 1960's Ox Hair and Cowrie Shells Sewn into Burlap

Kuba Tribe Helmet Mask African circa 1960's

The wooden mask is painted with reddish and dark pigments.The helmet and neck are burlap with applied cowrie shells sewn in and animal hair on the bottom. 

"Residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Kuba people are true artisans whose craftsmanship fueled traditional rituals, performances, and storytelling. Natural materials, in this case cowrie shells, hold a long history of use in African art often associated with beauty and spirituality. The Kuba Mweel Mask was used in ceremonial and cultural practices, namely representing the Kuba Creation Myth."

Condition: fine with obvious wear from age. No notable damage and wear is consistent with the age and style of the tribal mask.
