Maya Pottery Fragment with Expressive Terracotta Skull Relief
Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories c. 500 to 1100 CE ( Classic to Post Classic).
This amazing fragment is an expressive Skull from a vessel. You can see part of the vessel attached to the back, it has been reattached with glue. Light signs of the original paint can be seen.
The skull on a vessel were used to hold remains and used in ceremonial practices. Similar figures and vessels are attributed to K'iché Maya of Guatemala's southern highlands.
Size: approx 4 inches tall by 4 1/2 inches wide.
Condition: a fragment from a vessel, old glue marks can be seen where the skull was reattached to the vessel. The paint is faded. Please see the images for more details.
The client traveled in the 1960s through South America and has acquired his collection from travels and through Auctions.
