Meiji Era Mix Metal Japanese Tea Pot Side Handle Kyusu style
A dark bronze patina small Meiji era Japanese teapot with applied metal decorations.
An elegant side handle teapot, sometimes referred to as Kyusu teapots, these small teapot were part of tea ceremonies. The side handle would allow for a longer, more dramatic water arc stream.
The bronze patina is a darker brown with the teapot and lid having applied metal decorations. The decorations are silver and gold in color, typical of the late 19th early 20th Meiji period.
This piece is not marked and appears to be early 2oth or late 19th century export piece.
The applied metal figures are mixed, a bird, an owl on a branch, flowers and a vase and a bird in a floral scene. The lid is a large vase with flowers and tree branch.
Year: circa 1900
Size: approx 4 inches tall to top of small ball handle on the lid.
Condition: very fine with light marks to the patina in areas, silver solder line about the spout and around the bottom part of the teapot. No damage to the body of the pot. The underside of the lid has a small bend but it can not been seen on the outside. Please see the images for more details.
