Mid to Late Showa Period Oni Mask with White Real Yak Hair Lacquered Paper Mache Theatre or Parade Mask in Display Case
Oni Mask with Real White Hair for a Theatre or Parade
Lacquer over Paper Mache
Circa Showa Period, 1900-1930's
A No Theatre or Parade mask with screen eye holes, this mask has ever been used, but displayed in period wood case. The back is tied with a wire string and has not been apart. Most of these are stamped signed but I have not taken it out of the case.
The case is a wood box with green paper lining and the glass slides in and out.
The hair is glued, a simple test shows it is a natural glue, become sticky with a dab of water.
The face has glued white real hair, most likely Yak. The white hair represents ancient or wisdom, with this Oni, they are mostly known for their fierce and evil nature. The ancient one haunts and or torments.
Size: box is 14" tall x 9 1/2 wide x 6 1/4 deep
Mask is approx. 8 1/2 wide x almost 13" tall top of hair to bottom of beard.
Condition: Near perfect, been in the original case and never taken out. Stored in no light, the paint and details and hair are all in near perfect condition. The glue is secure. No damage except for a tiny discoloring to the copper eye piece on the left side. Please see the details. The inside paper is slightly separating on the left side and the glass has a tiny chip but does not affect the display.
