Rare Half Plate Daguerrotype of Important American Portrait Painting Not Identified Sitter or Photographer Circa 1840s
A half plate daguerrotype of American Painting, circa early 1800.
The portrait, similar in style and technique of Thomas Sully's early American portraits, this half plate daguerrotype is a photo of a painting.
Not Sully, the daguerrotype is not stamped with photographer and the portrait is not identified. Due to the age and size of the daguerrotype the photographer was most likely an east coast and larger city photographer, Philly, New York, Boston, ect. Not many photographers had half plate cameras and the quality of the photo is very good, two factors that would eliminate a smaller, less prominent photographers studios.
The "sitter" of the painting does look to be a politician or civil service or possible a very wealth man, again these people would be living in larger cities.
The daguerreotype has been resealed, the original seals are left in the back of the case, the new seals appear to be done in 90's and the notes on the seals states, no stamps or identifiers.
A beautiful and well photographed image of what would have been an important painting.
SIZE: half plate daguerreotype. The case's lid is not attached and the seals have been replaced. Please see the images for more details.
