Signed and Dated Mourning Sampler 1843 Christianna Kurtzs Large Possible Pennsylvania Area
A very nice large 17 1/2" x 18 1/2" Mourning Sampler signed and dated by the 12 years and 10 month old girl. The sampler is signed by Christianna Kurtzs and is dated 1843. As you can see from the photo, the piece is unfinished. She completed the two written areas but sadly, the mausoleum is unfinished.
The two blocked off word areas read: left side "Christianna Kurtzs work in the year 1843 Aged 12 years and 10 months was born May th 16th 1830". The right side reads; " Here is this place my name shall be when I am in eternity worms of the dust of my flesh shall eat here you may see my name complete". A strange and morbid saying and I wonder where she found these words.
The estate said that the original owners of the sampler said the family was from Pennsylvania area. The spelling of the name Kurtzs sounds Germanic, which there was a large German population in Penn. at this time.
A large stain is on the right side, approx. 4" x 3" and a smaller one on the left. Some areas have fold wear which has caused a small rip, two in the center and a smaller one on the right tack side.
Please email with questions or if you need additional photos.
If you have any information on this piece I would like to hear from you.
