The apothecary abbreviation of ind. meant "Indies" in Greek and or latin but in English meant "Daily"
This Tinct. Cannab. Ind. 19th c. apothecary medical jar has the label, "Tincture of Cannabis Daily".
Cannabis has been used for thousands of years, the Arab's brought the Greek and Roman history of medicine to the Europe. The invasion of the Moors to Spain in 400 ad, brought the knowledge the Moors got from their massive empire, which early on they conquered the lands the Greeks had during the Alexander the Great Empire and expansion. Even though the blood and death of these wars and expanding empires sound blood soaked, the knowledge which each of these cultures had worked its way into mainland Europe. The Story of Cannabis goes further back than these empires and periods, it was used for thousands of years as a medical herb by indigenous and "primitive" cultures.
In the 19th c. we find herbal medicine mixing with "modern" apothecary and the use of the herb was in a lot of tonics and tinctures that helped, appetite, nausea, restless sleep and a general nerve tonic.

This small apothecary jar with lid is circa 1860's. The ground pontil on the bottom shows its early construction. The label, as you can is early, many bottle books show this very jar and also some very similar. Note, the bottles were blank and the apothecary would add his own label to the bottles. They did not come from a factory with the label, these early apothecaries were "compounders", meaning they mixed their own medicines.
Size: 4" tall
Condition: A small and tiny chip on the mouth of the bottom, please see the image. The stopper is original to the jar and the label is original. No visible cracks or visible damage to the bottle, only a slight fading to the lettering on the label. Please see the images provided for more details
