WASP WWII Patch Women Airforce Service Pilots
The Military collecting over the years has grown and I have had the pleasure in dealing with most of wars staring with the Civil war on up, but here is a great piece both in the fields of Militaria and also Women's rights history.
The WASP aviation group was an all female squad that was originally called WAFS, Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. They were a primary transport pilots but as the War progressed the need for pilots grew and the WAFS turned into WASP, Women Airforce Service Pilots. Sadly the WASP were disbanded on Dec. 20th 1944 towards the end of the war.
Over 38 women lost their lives and were never given honors until the 1970's.
Here is a wonderful patch depicting the insignia of the WASP, a cartoon like character of a winged woman with goggles swooping down.
The patch is approx. 3 3/4" diam. and has a small tear at the top. As you can see the stitching thread is still present.
This piece comes to me through a military collector of over 30+ years.
